Police Seize Cars and Report Dozens of Drivers in Stansted Airport Taxi Safety Sting

Police seized two uninsured cars and reported 28 drivers for various offences during a major safety operation at Stansted Airport. The crackdown has sent a clear message to taxi and private hire operators that authorities are watching closely to ensure passenger safety remains paramount.

Multi-Agency Operation Targets Airport Vehicles

The operation took place on Thremhall Avenue on 29 April and was carried out by officers from the Stansted Airport neighbourhood policing team working alongside roads policing officers, the Commercial Vehicle Unit, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and licensing teams from Uttlesford, Braintree, Chelmsford, Harlow and Wolverhampton councils.

A total of 50 vehicles were stopped during the operation, which mainly focused on taxis and private hire vehicles, though officers also pulled over other motorists where potential offences were spotted.

Range of Offences Uncovered

The 28 drivers were reported for prosecution related to offences including not being insured, not wearing seatbelts and for illegally-modified index plates, or ‘ghost plates’. Ghost plates are number plates that have been altered to make them difficult to read by automatic number plate recognition cameras.

PC Ross Ashcroft, of the Stansted Airport neighbourhood policing team, expressed his disappointment at the findings. “I was disappointed that we had to seize two vehicles for being uninsured,” he said.

Most Drivers Compliant, But Some Ignored the Law

PC Ashcroft noted that “the vast majority of drivers of private hire vehicles and taxis are law-abiding and keep their vehicles well maintained” but added that “there are a few who ignore the laws which help to keep them, their passengers and other road-users safe and it’s those few we are looking out for.”

The officer emphasised the importance of the checks, stating: “Our priority is keeping people safe. That’s not just at the terminal but on the surrounding roads as well.”

Legal Requirements for Passenger-Carrying Drivers

Licensing officers from Uttlesford, Braintree, Chelmsford, Harlow and Wolverhampton councils were also present to check taxi and private hire drivers were correctly licensed, as a number of legal requirements must be met by drivers who are paid to carry passengers including a medical examination to ensure they are fit to drive.

More Checks Planned for the Future

Police said further joint enforcement operations are planned around Stansted Airport, which serves passengers travelling from across the UK, as authorities continue to monitor compliance among taxi and private hire operators working at the transport hub.

PC Ashcroft confirmed: “Stansted Airport attracts air passengers from all over the country and we will be carrying out more of these checks with the DVLA and councils in the future to ensure their safety on the roads as they arrive at and depart from the airport.”

The operation forms part of a broader effort to improve road safety and ensure that taxi and private hire drivers operating at one of the UK’s busiest airports meet all legal and safety standards. For the thousands of passengers who pass through Stansted daily, such enforcement provides reassurance that the vehicles transporting them are safe, legal, and properly insured.
