TransiT has opened its first Flexible Fund call, making a total of £1.2 million available for research projects focused on regional transport simulation and decarbonised transport futures.
The hub expects to support around six projects through the call. Expressions of interest must be submitted by 19 October 2026.
Successful projects are scheduled to begin in April 2027 and must be completed within 12 months. Applicants must be eligible to receive UK Research and Innovation funding.
Projects will also need to secure industrial match funding worth at least 30% of the project value. The match can be provided in cash or in kind.
The call seeks work using regional transport simulation for operational or planning decision support. Proposals are intended to contribute to decarbonised transport futures and must align with TransiT’s challenge-led demonstrators.
Research themes identified in the call include data quality, links between transport and energy, accessibility, economics and demand-responsive transport.
Passengers planning airport journeys can compare pre-booked options with DM Airport Transfers.
TransiT describes its approach as using interconnected digital twins to develop scalable decarbonisation solutions. The hub is a collaboration involving universities and industry partners across road, rail, aviation and maritime transport.
The Flexible Fund is an application opportunity rather than an announcement of awards to named projects. The £1.2 million is the total call budget, while the number and identity of successful projects will be determined through the application process.
Applicants will need to meet the UK Research and Innovation eligibility requirement, demonstrate the required industrial contribution and set out work that fits the programme’s challenge-led demonstrator approach.
The proposed work must address operational or planning decision support in transport systems moving towards decarbonisation. This gives applicants several possible routes into the call, including projects focused on transport-energy relationships, accessibility, economics or demand-responsive services.
The October deadline precedes the planned April 2027 start for successful projects. Each project must finish within 12 months, and the required industrial contribution must be secured in cash or in kind.
