Driverless Taxi Spotted in Waterloo Rank Queue

An autonomous vehicle being trialled in London was photographed accidentally joining a traditional black cab queue at Waterloo Station this week, in what has been described as a humorous glimpse into the future of urban transport.

The image, shared on social media by the London Cab Drivers Club (LCDC), showed a white Jaguar I-PACE fitted with roof-mounted sensors and cameras waiting in the queue of taxis beneath a railway bridge near the busy rail terminus. The group posted “according to some….. the future is Autonomous”, alongside laughing emojis.

The incident has sparked conversation about the imminent arrival of driverless taxis on London’s streets, with several operators preparing to launch commercial services as early as next year.

Testing Ground for Autonomous Technology

London has become a key testing ground for automated driving systems because of its dense traffic, complex road layouts and high pedestrian activity. Companies involved in UK trials currently operate with safety drivers behind the wheel, with vehicles gathering real-world data and assessing how systems respond to buses, cyclists, taxis and unpredictable urban conditions.

While autonomous vehicle operators currently do not operate commercial services in the UK just yet, autonomous vehicle developers are expanding road trials in the capital as the Government prepares legislation aimed at enabling wider deployment in the near future.

Government Fast-Tracks Driverless Taxi Pilots

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has confirmed that the government will fast-track pilots to spring 2026, introducing self-driving commercial pilots on England’s roads. Firms will be able to pilot small scale ‘taxi- and bus-like’ services without a safety driver for the first time – which could be available to members of the public to book via an app.

Bringing forward the pilots of self-driving vehicles will help the government deliver the Plan for Change, by creating 38,000 jobs to put money in the pockets of hardworking people, driving investment to back British engineering excellence and creating an industry worth £42 billion by 2035.

Legal Framework in Place

The UK’s Automated Vehicles Act, passed in 2024, established the legal framework for self-driving vehicles to operate commercially on British roads subject to regulatory approval. The landmark legislation clarifies liability and safety requirements, positioning the UK as one of the world’s most advanced jurisdictions for autonomous vehicle deployment.

Innovation, world-leading regulation and road safety will be at the forefront of the pilots, with self-driving vehicles aiming to reduce human error – which contributes to 88% of all road collisions.

Taxi Trade Scepticism Remains

Black cab drivers and industry representatives have continued to question whether autonomous systems can safely navigate the capital’s busiest districts to the standards expected of licensed taxi drivers. The London Cab Drivers Club, which represents working taxi drivers in the capital, has been vocal in expressing concerns about the technology’s readiness for London’s challenging roads.

The Department for Transport has previously said limited autonomous passenger services could begin appearing from 2026, although large-scale deployment in central London remains some way off.

What Happens Next?

Multiple operators including Waymo, Uber and Lyft have announced plans to launch autonomous taxi services in London pending regulatory approval. The vehicles will operate with Level 4 autonomy, meaning they can drive themselves without human input within defined areas and conditions.

For now, trial vehicles like the one spotted at Waterloo continue gathering data to prepare the technology for commercial deployment. Whether they’ll be picking up passengers from taxi ranks across the capital by this time next year remains to be seen – but the wheels are certainly in motion.
