A 36-year-old man has been jailed for 30 months after a horrifying knife attack on a taxi driver in Hamilton — all over a £6 fare.
According to a report by Glasgow Live, the passenger turned on the driver during a dispute about payment, stabbing him and threatening to kill him. The court was told the attack was “appalling” — and frankly, reading the details, it’s hard to argue with that description.

A £6 fare. That’s it. Less than the price of a pint in some parts of the country, and a driver was left bleeding inside his own cab, fearing for his life.
For taxi and private hire drivers reading this, it’ll sound depressingly familiar. The job puts you alone in a vehicle with total strangers, often late at night, often dealing with people who’ve had a few too many, and almost always over relatively small sums of money. Most fares pass without incident. But cases like this Hamilton attack are a reminder of how quickly things can turn — and how a routine pickup can end in A&E.
The 30-month sentence will be welcomed by trade bodies who’ve long argued that attacks on drivers should be treated as a serious aggravating factor. Drivers are public-facing workers doing a job that keeps people moving, especially at hours when other transport isn’t running. Attacks on them aren’t just attacks on individuals — they’re attacks on a service the whole community relies on.
There’s also the practical question of what drivers can do to protect themselves. CCTV in cabs is becoming more common, and many councils now require it as a licensing condition. Some drivers ask for fares upfront on longer journeys, particularly late at night. Neither is a guarantee of safety, but both make incidents easier to investigate and prosecute.
The Hamilton case is one of several recent knife attacks on UK cabbies reported in the last 12 months. None of them are acceptable — and the trade deserves better protection than it currently has.
