Not everyone wants to plug in. That’s just a fact. For all the noise around electric cars and PHEVs, there’s still a significant chunk of UK drivers who want something straightforward — fill it up, drive it, save some fuel, and get on with life. The 2026 MG ZS Hybrid+ is squarely aimed at those people, and it makes a very compelling case for itself.
What Is the MG ZS Hybrid+?
This is the second-generation MG ZS, and it’s a significant step up from what came before. The previous model was, to be blunt about it, a budget buy with not much going for it beyond the price tag. The new car is a different story. It’s grown considerably — at 4,430mm long, it’s actually slightly longer than a Nissan Qashqai — and it’s now offered exclusively with a self-charging hybrid powertrain, the same system found in the MG3 Hybrid+ supermini.
The setup pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a powerful electric motor and a 1.83kWh battery. Combined output is 196hp, with a hefty 465Nm of torque, all sent to the front wheels through a three-speed automatic gearbox. The headline numbers — 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds and an official combined fuel figure of 55.4mpg — are genuinely impressive for a family SUV at this price.
How Does It Drive?
Around town, the experience is notably EV-like. At low to moderate speeds, the electric motor does most of the work, with the petrol engine stepping in to charge the battery or assist under heavier acceleration. The result is smooth, quiet progress in urban environments, and the strong torque figure means there’s always plenty of response when you need it.
On faster roads, the picture is a little more mixed. The petrol engine can be abrupt when it kicks in under hard acceleration — a few reviewers have noted it can be quite loud and sudden under load. Ride quality is on the firm side, and there’s more road noise than you’d ideally want on a longer motorway run. Handling is tidy enough for a family SUV without being anything to write home about, and there’s a notable absence of steering wheel reach adjustment, which some drivers will find frustrating when trying to dial in the right driving position.
That said, for the daily commute and weekend family run, it does the job well and rewards a smooth driving style with genuinely decent real-world efficiency.
Inside and Practical Bits
The interior has moved on considerably from the old car. There’s a 12.3-inch touchscreen as standard, a clean dashboard layout, and quality materials in the places you touch most often. The Trophy trim adds a 360-degree camera, heated seats, climate control, and a heated steering wheel — luxuries that would cost considerably more on rival models.
Boot space comes in at 443 litres, which is competitive for the class, and expands to 1,457 litres with the rear seats folded in a 60/40 split. Rear passenger space is generous — four adults can sit in genuine comfort — making it a practical choice for families.

The Price Is the Real Story
This is where the MG ZS Hybrid+ genuinely stands out. The Hybrid+ SE starts at just under £23,000, while the top-spec Trophy model sits just over £25,000. To put that in perspective, similarly sized hybrid SUVs from Renault, Nissan, and Toyota come in thousands of pounds more expensive. The ZS undercuts the Renault Symbioz by more than £7,000 and the Nissan Qashqai hybrid by over £12,000 on P11D price. That’s a remarkable gap in value.
Every model also comes with MG’s seven-year warranty, which provides genuine peace of mind and reflects well on the brand’s confidence in the product.
Is It Worth Buying?
For a driver who wants a spacious, well-equipped, self-charging hybrid SUV without committing to the full EV lifestyle, the MG ZS Hybrid+ is genuinely hard to beat at the price. The ride and refinement don’t quite match more established rivals, and the occasional engine intrusion can catch you off guard — but these are compromises that are much easier to accept when you’re saving several thousand pounds on the purchase price.
If you’re in the market for a practical family SUV and you’re not ready to go fully electric, this deserves a serious look.
