Toyota will supply the fuel-cell system for Iveco’s next-generation S-eWay Fuel Cell heavy truck as part of a collaboration within EMPOWER, an EU-funded Horizon Europe project focused on zero-emission heavy-duty transport.
Iveco is responsible for the vehicle-development, integration and validation work. The partners say the programme is intended to demonstrate fuel-cell technology in demanding real-world operating conditions before any future industrial-scale expansion.
The vehicle will use Toyota’s third-generation fuel-cell technology. Toyota and Iveco specify a combined fuel-cell output of 300kW and state a target driving range of more than 900km. They also give an intended fuel-cell operating life exceeding 25,000 hours.
Iveco says a revised energy-management approach will allow the truck to use half the battery capacity of its previous fuel-cell-truck generation. That change forms part of the effort to develop a heavy-duty vehicle suited to long-distance operation while reducing reliance on battery capacity within the fuel-cell system.
The project follows Iveco fuel-cell trucks previously deployed through the H2Haul project. The new S-eWay Fuel Cell is intended to take the technology into a further development and validation phase rather than represent a confirmed series-production vehicle.

Vehicle validation and testing are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2026. The partners plan to begin on-road trials in the first half of 2027, providing an opportunity to assess the vehicle in operating conditions beyond laboratory or development testing.
EMPOWER stands for Eco-operated, Modular, highly efficient, and flexible multi-powertrain for long-haul heavy-duty vehicles. Its work covers zero-emission heavy-duty transport and reflects an approach that considers more than one powertrain technology for heavy freight.
Alongside the fuel-cell programme, Iveco is contributing a battery-electric demonstrator to EMPOWER. The company describes that contribution as part of its multi-powertrain approach to decarbonising heavy-duty transport.
The Toyota-Iveco announcement covers development, integration, validation and planned testing of the new truck. It does not announce series production, a customer-sale launch or a date for industrial-scale expansion.
