A fuel supply issue that briefly threatened summer flying schedules at Gatwick Airport has been resolved, after a two-day warning to airlines caused a stir over the bank holiday weekend.
Pilots were alerted via the aviation Notam system that the airport had a fuel shortage and were urged to load up on extra fuel at other airports where possible before flying in. The notice, which named a shortage lasting until 11pm on Monday, raised concerns that holidaymakers could face disruption during one of the busiest travel weeks of the summer. Airlines reportedly affected by the warning included British Airways, easyJet, Wizz Air, TUI and Jet2.
By Monday morning, a Gatwick spokesperson confirmed the issue had been fixed: “Following a temporary technical issue yesterday that impacted fuel supply to the airport, we are pleased to report that the issue has now been resolved. Fuel is flowing as expected, all airlines are operating as normal and passengers should continue to travel as planned.”
It’s understood engineers worked to fix a technical fault at one of the airport’s fuel suppliers, and that no flights were cancelled as a result. Importantly, Gatwick confirmed the issue was unrelated to the wider concerns around jet fuel supply linked to the conflict in the Middle East, which have periodically sparked fears of disruption to summer flying this year.
