A major piece of the UK’s long-haul puzzle has been slotted back into place today, 30th March 2026, as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) officially resumes its direct service between Lahore and London Heathrow.
The arrival of the first flight from Lahore marks the completion of the airline’s initial return to the capital, coming just 24 hours after the successful touchdown of the first Islamabad-Heathrow flight yesterday. This is the first time the national flag carrier has operated scheduled passenger services to London since a ban was imposed in 2020.

Reconnecting the Diaspora
For the UK’s 1.6 million-strong Pakistani community, the return of direct PIA flights is a significant development. While other carriers have filled the gap over the last six years, the “Green Flag” airline remains a preferred choice for many due to its direct routing, generous baggage allowances, and traditional on-board hospitality.
The new schedule initially includes:
- Islamabad to Heathrow: Three flights per week (departed Sunday).
- Lahore to Heathrow: One flight per week (starting today, Monday).
- Manchester Base: Continued operations with multiple weekly frequencies.
A New Chapter for the “Old Friend”
The resumption was marked by high-profile ceremonies both in Pakistan and at Heathrow’s Terminal 4. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott and Pakistan’s Defence Secretary were among those who saw off the inaugural flights, highlighting the move as a major milestone for bilateral trade and tourism.
At Heathrow, an airport spokesperson welcomed the carrier back, referring to PIA as an “old friend” with a relationship spanning over seven decades. The return follows a rigorous safety audit and significant improvements in Pakistan’s aviation oversight, leading to the lifting of the UK and EU bans last year.
What’s Next for PIA?
The relaunch comes at a pivotal time for the airline, following its recent privatisation and a consortium-led investment aimed at modernising the fleet. With inaugural flights reportedly sold out, there is already talk of expanding the schedule.
Industry analysts suggest that if the current routes prove successful, we could see the return of flights to Birmingham and an increase in frequencies from Karachi later in 2026. For now, the focus is on a smooth return to the UK’s busiest hub, providing a faster, more convenient bridge for families, students, and business travellers alike.
