New BMW Safety System Can Delay Car Door Opening if Cyclist Is Approaching

BMW has introduced an expanded suite of active safety technology that can actively delay a car door from opening when the vehicle detects an approaching cyclist.

The enhanced Exit Warning system forms part of a new generation of standard safety features being introduced alongside BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles.

Exit-warning systems are already available on a number of modern cars, typically alerting occupants with lights or audible warnings when another road user is approaching from behind.

BMW’s latest system goes a step further by being capable of briefly delaying the opening of the door when it detects an immediate collision risk.

The technology is designed particularly to reduce so-called “dooring” incidents, where a driver or passenger opens a vehicle door into the path of a cyclist.

BMW says the enhanced Exit Warning system can recognise approaching road users and intervene when necessary rather than relying solely on the occupant noticing a warning.

The development forms part of BMW’s wider Symbiotic Drive approach, which is designed to keep assistance systems largely in the background while allowing them to intervene when the vehicle detects a genuine risk.

BMW is also expanding its collision-avoidance technology in other areas.

The latest Emergency Brake Assistant with Evasion Assistant is designed to help avoid frontal collisions by applying maximum braking where required while also supporting evasive manoeuvres.

The system can respond to a wider range of hazards, including wildlife crossing the road.

Other standard functions include Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, Side Collision Protection and Crossing Traffic Warning with brake intervention when turning into a road or leaving a parking space.

BMW says its approach is intended to avoid unnecessary interventions. Under its Symbiotic Drive concept, assistance systems are designed to recognise whether the driver is already responding appropriately before deciding whether additional intervention is required.

The new technology is particularly interesting because manufacturers are increasingly moving from systems that simply warn drivers about hazards towards systems capable of physically intervening before a collision occurs.

In the case of Exit Warning, preventing or delaying the door-opening movement could give an approaching cyclist valuable additional time to pass the stationary vehicle safely.

As with other driver-assistance technology, the system should not be treated as a substitute for occupants checking their surroundings before opening a vehicle door.

BMW’s announcement comes as the Neue Klasse generation begins reaching production. DM News previously reported on the new all-electric BMW i3, which is being produced at the manufacturer’s Munich plant and is expected to reach customers from autumn 2026.

The expanded safety technology will become part of BMW’s broader Neue Klasse vehicle architecture rather than being limited to a single standalone safety feature.
