Uber Shuts Down Ride-Hailing Operations in Nigeria and Uganda

Uber has ended its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria and Uganda, with the shutdown taking effect on 2 September 2026.

The company said the decision followed a review of its business and changing investment priorities. It said the move is limited to the two countries and will not affect its wider operations in sub-Saharan Africa.

Uber said it would support drivers, riders and employees affected by the decision during the transition. Rider support will remain available for 21 days after the shutdown.

The company began operating in Lagos in 2014 and launched in Uganda in 2016. Its departure removes the platform from two established ride-hailing markets where it faced competition from services including Bolt, inDrive, SafeBoda and Faras.
