Private UK EV ownership jumps by 83,000 in record quarter as total tops 860,000

Private ownership of battery-electric cars in the UK rose by 83,136 in the first quarter of 2026, taking the total to 860,334, according to new analysis by the AA.

The increase between the end of December 2025 and the end of March 2026 was 10.7% and was the largest quarterly rise recorded in the AA’s analysis of Department for Transport and DVLA data.

Private battery-electric car ownership was also 271,382 higher than in the first quarter of 2025. The figures indicate that growth continued to accelerate during the period, although the data covers privately owned cars rather than the wider vehicle market.

Wales recorded the strongest annual growth among the UK nations, with private battery-electric ownership increasing by 55.1%. Blaenau Gwent was the fastest-growing local authority, recording an annual increase of 84.8%.
