Stansted Airport College Expansion Secures £5m Essex Council Backing

Essex County Council has confirmed a £5m contribution towards the proposed expansion of Stansted Airport College, adding a significant funding commitment to plans that could more than double the campus’s capacity.

The expansion would increase the number of students from 568 to approximately 1,350. The first phase is expected to open in September 2027, subject to planning approval.

The funding commitment was confirmed on 3 September during a visit concerning the proposed project. Harlow College and London Stansted submitted a planning application earlier in August 2026.

Plans include a new two-storey teaching building, a workshop, a hangar and a covered courtyard. The expanded campus is intended to support workforce development in aviation, engineering and STEM subjects.

Stansted Airport College opened on the airport campus in 2018. The proposed development would create additional teaching and practical training space while increasing the number of students the college can accommodate.

The September 2027 opening date is therefore a projected milestone rather than a confirmed launch date. The expansion must first secure approval for the submitted plans.

For the airport and businesses operating around it, the project is positioned as a way to strengthen the local pipeline of aviation and engineering skills. The council’s £5m contribution provides financial backing for the proposal, but the project remains subject to the planning process.
