Reported losses linked to AI-enabled fraud rose eightfold to £9.6m in 2025-26, according to a new national assessment published by the City of London Police.
The force said reports identifying artificial intelligence as a factor increased from 193 in 2024-25 to 956 in 2025-26. The figures are included in the first Report Fraud Annual Assessment, published on 4 September.
Criminals are using cloned voices, manipulated images, fake websites and AI-generated videos as part of fraud attempts. Investment fraud accounted for the largest share of reports involving AI-enabled crime.
The assessment covers reporting and victim-support activity handled through Report Fraud and the National Cyber and Fraud Protect Team. It highlights the growing use of artificial intelligence in techniques designed to make fraudulent communications and online material appear more convincing.

The report also records changes in how victims’ reports were handled. More than 180,000 victims received an outcome to their report between January and June 2026, while average review and victim-update times fell from 37 days to five days.
More than 10,600 victims received specialist care during the same period, according to the assessment.
The new figures provide a national picture of reported AI-linked fraud across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. They also underline the importance of treating unexpected calls, websites, images and videos with caution, particularly where they are used to support an investment approach or request for money.
