More People Join UK Armed Forces Than Leave for First Full Year Since 2021

More people joined the UK Regular Forces than left during the year to June 2026, according to new Ministry of Defence figures, marking the first full-year improvement of this kind since 2021.

Intake exceeded outflow by 1,460 personnel in the 12 months to 30 June. The MOD said the figures also showed a fourth consecutive quarter in which intake was higher than outflow, the longest such run since 2021.

The latest statistics were published on 3 September as part of the MOD’s quarterly personnel update. They show Regular Forces strength increasing by 1,450 personnel, or 1.1%, over the year.

Strength rose across all three services. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines increased by 440 personnel, the Army rose by 170, and the Royal Air Force increased by 840.

Total UK Armed Forces strength stood at 182,980 on 1 July 2026.
