UK Vows ‘Unshakeable’ Falklands Commitment After Argentina Threatens Oil Sanctions

The UK has reaffirmed its commitment to the Falkland Islands after Argentine President Javier Milei announced tougher sanctions targeting companies involved in oil projects around the territory.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said Britain’s commitment to the Falklands was “absolute and unshakeable”, in a direct response to Argentina’s latest measures.

Milei also announced plans to extend penalties beyond companies to shareholders, directors and suppliers linked to what Argentina considers unauthorised activity. The measures add pressure to offshore oil development connected with the islands.

Argentina is also planning additional defence resources and has proposed establishing a naval base in Tierra del Fuego. The announcements represent a fresh escalation in the longstanding sovereignty dispute between the two countries.
