Major Fire Hits BYD Global Headquarters Parking Facility

A significant fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning (14 April 2026) at a multi-storey parking structure within BYD’s Pingshan Park campus in Shenzhen, China.

Emergency services were alerted at approximately 2:48 am when flames began spreading through a dedicated “three-dimensional” parking garage at the headquarters of the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer. Dramatic footage from the scene showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky as municipal and district fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

Official Statements and Casualties

BYD released a statement confirming that the affected area was specifically used for the storage of test and scrapped vehicles. The company highlighted that the blaze did not involve finished production cars or active manufacturing lines.

The Shenzhen Pingshan District Fire Rescue Bureau confirmed there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the incident.

Cause of the Fire

While early social media speculation focused on battery safety, preliminary investigations have ruled out battery self-ignition. Reports suggest the fire was actually triggered by external construction workers who were dismantling idle equipment in the facility. It is believed their operations accidentally ignited insulation cotton and other combustible materials nearby.

Market and Production Impact

Despite the scale of the fire, BYD has assured the public that production operations at the Pingshan base—one of its most critical R&D and manufacturing hubs—remain unaffected. There is no expected impact on current delivery schedules.

The news caused a slight ripple in financial markets, with BYD’s shares in Hong Kong dipping by roughly 1% following the initial reports before stabilising.
