Ipswich Taxi Fares Could Rise By Up To 3.2% Under New Council Proposals

Ipswich taxi fares could rise by up to 3.2% under proposed revised hackney carriage tariffs being put forward for consultation.

Ipswich Borough Council’s Executive is due to consider the statutory consultation at its meeting on 8 September 2026. The fare-review report and proposed tariff structure have been published ahead of that decision.

Under the proposed changes, a two-mile daytime journey would increase from £8 to £8.10. The equivalent night fare would rise from £10 to £10.10.

The largest percentage increases would apply to longer journeys. A 20-mile daytime fare and a 20-mile night fare would both increase by about 3.2% under the proposed tariff structure.

The review reflects reported increases in fuel, insurance and other operating costs. The request for revised fares has been made by the Ipswich Station Taxi Tenants Association, which represents the drivers behind the proposal.

The Executive is being asked to approve consultation on the revised tariffs, rather than introduce the changes immediately. A statutory objection period would follow, allowing objections to be considered before implementation.

If the objections process does not prevent the changes, the revised fares could take effect from 13 October 2026.

The proposals would therefore still need to progress through the council’s consultation and objection arrangements before drivers could charge the new rates. The 8 September meeting will be the next formal stage in the fare review.
