UK electric cars become biggest single fuel type as August registrations rise 30%

Battery-electric cars became the UK’s largest individual new-car fuel type in August, with registrations rising by about 30% year on year to 27,876.

The figures from New AutoMotive show battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) taking a 29.7% share of the August market. That put them ahead of other individual fuel categories for the month, marking a significant shift in the make-up of new-car registrations.

Overall UK new-car registrations reached 93,977 in August, up 17.5% compared with the same month in 2025. Hybrid electric vehicles accounted for approximately 29% of the market, according to figures reported alongside the registration data.

The increase in BEV registrations was also reflected in the competitive position of manufacturers. Tesla held an 8.8% share of the UK battery-electric market, while BYD reached 6.4%, based on the New AutoMotive figures.

The data provides fresh evidence of the expanding role of battery-electric cars in the UK’s new-vehicle market. For private motorists and businesses considering their next vehicle, the figures indicate that electric cars are no longer a smaller individual fuel category within monthly registration totals.

However, the figures cover new-car registrations for August and do not by themselves show the composition of the wider vehicle parc, used-car market or taxi and private-hire fleets. They also do not indicate how individual operators or drivers will respond to the changing mix of new vehicles.

The August results were released on 3 September 2026 and represent the latest monthly snapshot of UK new-car demand.
