Colchester Man Handed Suspended Sentence After Leaving Taxi Driver for Dead

A Colchester man who launched a savage, unprovoked attack on a taxi driver, leaving him with such serious injuries that he could have died, has been sentenced at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.

Brodie Farrell, 26, got into the taxi in the city centre with a friend after a night out. When the pair reached their stop in Highwoods, they tried to run off without paying the £15 fare. The driver challenged them over it, and Farrell responded by violently attacking him, leaving him unconscious in the road. He wasn’t found for another 15 minutes, when another taxi driver came across him lying on the ground.

In a statement read to the court, the victim said the assault had left him with memory loss and struggling to carry out basic everyday tasks, and that he believed he would have died from his injuries had he not been discovered when he was.

Prosecutor Angharad Bizby told the court the victim had let Farrell and his friend into the cab in good faith after their night out, only for the pair to try to leave without paying once they arrived. Farrell’s friend, who wasn’t involved in the assault itself, was fined separately.

Mitigating, Aqsa Farooq told the court Farrell had shown genuine remorse since the incident, which took place in November 2024, and had been struggling at the time having recently left the armed forces. She said he had become withdrawn and was suffering from anxiety and depression.

Farrell was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to pay his victim £5,000 in compensation and complete 270 hours of unpaid work alongside 20 rehabilitation days.

It’s another grim reminder of the risks drivers take every single shift, simply for doing their job and getting people home safely.
