In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance road safety, Devon and Cornwall have commenced trials of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) cameras designed to detect drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. Developed by road safety firm Acusensus, these mobile cameras analyze driving behaviors indicative of impairment, such as swerving or erratic speeds. Upon identifying suspicious activity, the system alerts nearby police units, enabling prompt intervention and roadside testing.
The trial, running throughout December, is a key component of Vision Zero South West’s strategy to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries. Superintendent Simon Jenkinson of Devon and Cornwall Police emphasized the importance of integrating emerging technologies, stating that with an extensive 14,000-mile road network, these AI cameras are vital for effective resource deployment.
Geoff Collins, UK General Manager of Acusensus, highlighted the global significance of the trial, noting that early detection of impaired driving behaviors can prevent potential incidents and save lives. This initiative complements existing campaigns like Lift Legend and Operation Limit, as well as the introduction of new Night Bus services in parts of Torbay and North Devon, all aimed at promoting safer driving practices during the festive season.
The AI technology builds upon previous systems used to identify mobile phone usage and seatbelt compliance, marking a significant advancement in proactive road safety measures. By focusing on early detection and intervention, authorities hope to deter impaired driving and enhance overall public safety on the roads.
