MAN ARRESTED AFTER DRAMATIC THREE-CAR CRASH FLIPS VEHICLE ON MERSEY GATEWAY BRIDGE

A man has been arrested after a serious three-vehicle crash shut the Mersey Gateway Bridge for several hours, with dramatic footage showing one car flipped onto its roof in the middle of the carriageway.

The crash happened on the northbound carriageway of the A533 at 6.45pm on Monday, 17 August, involving a black Ford Focus, a black Mercedes and a grey Audi. Cheshire Police confirmed the road was closed while police, ambulance crews and two fire engines dealt with the scene, with traffic monitoring site Inrix reporting stationary traffic stretching back from the Bridgewater Expressway to the A557 Queensway. Northbound traffic was diverted off at the Bridgewater Interchange and over the Silver Jubilee Bridge, with a single lane reopening at around 8pm as the carriageway was gradually cleared.

There were no reports of any life-threatening injuries, though a number of people were treated by paramedics at the scene, and Cheshire Fire and Rescue confirmed four people were taken to hospital. The driver of the Ford Focus, a 25-year-old man from Northwich, was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without consent, careless driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. He was initially taken to hospital as a precaution before being taken into police custody.

Dramatic dashcam footage shared with the Liverpool Echo captured the moment of the crash, showing one of the vehicles flipped onto its roof in the road.
