A private hire driver in a 2019 Kia e-Niro with over 280,000 miles on the clock has successfully completed a high-stakes challenge driving from Manchester city center to Heathrow Airport on a single charge.

The journey, spanning 214 miles, tested the efficiency and endurance of the well-used electric vehicle. The driver started by fully charging near the Trafford Centre, reaching 100% with an estimated 252 miles of range. Before picking up the customer, he made a smart decision to top up an extra six miles at a nearby charger, ensuring maximum battery capacity.
With the passenger on board, he set off towards Heathrow, carefully managing the vehicle’s energy consumption. After dropping off the customer, he arrived at Beaconsfield Services with just two miles of charge remaining—a close call that highlighted both the capability and range anxiety challenges of older EVs.
Despite its high mileage, the first-generation Kia e-Niro performed impressively, showcasing its durability and efficiency even after extensive use. However, the near-empty battery at the end of the journey reinforces the need for careful planning and accessible charging infrastructure for long-haul electric journeys.
