The Kia PV5 has set a new world record after travelling 430.84 miles (693.38km) on a single charge while carrying a full payload of 690kg, significantly exceeding its official WLTP range of 258 miles.
The record attempt took place on public roads north of Frankfurt, Germany, using a route designed to replicate real-world driving conditions. This included towns, villages, roundabouts, traffic lights, and normal traffic flow rather than a controlled test track.
During the official run, the PV5 completed 11 full laps of a 36.2-mile circuit, eventually coming to a stop during the 12th lap after more than 22 hours of continuous driving. The vehicle was driven by Christopher Nigemeier, a member of the PV5 development team, alongside George Barrow, editor of Van Reviewer.
Despite operating with a full load, the electric van achieved an average efficiency of 6 miles per kWh, powered by its 71.2kWh battery. Kia states that this performance highlights the PV5’s durability and efficiency in conditions that closely reflect everyday commercial use.

DM News Commentary
Range anxiety remains one of the biggest concerns for taxi, private hire, and airport transfer drivers considering electric minibuses such as the Kia PV5 and the upcoming PV7 — particularly when operating fully loaded with passengers and luggage.
While this world-record drive was clearly an extreme endurance test rather than a normal working shift, it sends a strong signal to the trade. Even allowing for less-than-perfect driving conditions, motorway speeds, heating, and passenger comfort, the results suggest that real-world usable range may be far better than many drivers expect.
For operators covering long airport runs, intercity work, or full-day shifts, this achievement will likely help ease concerns that electric passenger vehicles cannot cope with heavy loads or extended mileage.
