Heathrow Airport has confirmed it has recorded the busiest year in its history, with passenger numbers exceeding 84 million for the first time.

Record days, improved performance and strong cargo volumes

Heathrow reported that its single busiest day on record took place on 1 August, when more than 270,000 passengers travelled through the airport

Operational performance also showed notable improvements. In December, Heathrow was ranked Europe’s most punctual hub airport, with over 97% of passengers clearing security in under five minutes. Baggage handling also improved significantly, with a 98% baggage load rate, meaning around 250,000 more bags made it onto flights compared with the previous year

Cargo volumes remained strong, with 138,000 tonnes of freight handled in December alone. Heathrow highlighted several record-breaking cargo days throughout the year, reinforcing its position as the UK’s largest port by value

Retail spending also surged over the Christmas period, with World Duty Free selling an item every 5.5 seconds during December, reflecting high passenger footfall and confidence among travellers

Investment plans for 2026

Looking ahead, Heathrow confirmed plans to invest more than £1.3 billion in 2026, aimed at further improving passenger experience, resilience and service standards across the airport

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said the results demonstrated strong demand for travel and highlighted the importance of continued investment and supportive regulation to unlock future growth and connectivity for the UK.

These figures underline just how strong the recovery in air travel has become, with Heathrow now operating at levels beyond anything seen pre-pandemic. Record passenger numbers and improved punctuality will be welcome news for travellers, but they also have clear knock-on effects for the wider transport ecosystem.

For taxi and private hire drivers, sustained high passenger volumes usually translate into consistent airport work, particularly during peak holiday periods. However, increased traffic also raises ongoing concerns around congestion, airport access charges and operating costs — issues that drivers will be watching closely as Heathrow continues to expand and invest.
