Two people have been taken to hospital following a serious crash involving a lorry at the Wallasey (Kingsway) Tunnel toll booths this afternoon.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) confirmed that emergency crews were called at 12:02pm today (25 September). Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes, with three fire engines and a search and rescue team attending.

Crash Involving Articulated Lorry
The collision involved an articulated heavy goods vehicle (HGV) striking one of the toll booths. According to MFRS, one of the vehicle’s occupants was able to get out independently after being assessed by paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).
A second casualty, also conscious and breathing, was treated at the scene before both were taken to hospital by ambulance. The HGV was made safe but remains in position awaiting recovery.
A spokesperson for MFRS said:
“On arrival this was a road traffic collision (RTC) involving one articulated vehicle into one toll booth. Both casualties have been safely conveyed to hospital by NWAS.”

Traffic Disruption
Merseyside Police and Tunnel Police assisted with traffic management, while cross-river bus services to Liverpool were diverted through the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel, leading to delays for travellers.
Fire crews left the scene by 12:55pm, but drivers were warned to expect ongoing disruption throughout the afternoon as recovery work continued.
