Electric vehicle discount and changes to Residents’ Discount also under review
Transport for London (TfL) has launched a public consultation on proposed changes to the Central London Congestion Charging scheme, which could see the daily charge increase from £15 to £18.
The proposed changes, if approved, would take effect from January 2026 and are aimed at further reducing traffic and improving air quality in the capital.
Key proposals include:
- Charge increase: The standard daily Congestion Charge would rise by £3, taking it from £15 to £18.
- Electric vehicle (EV) discount: A new discount would be introduced for electric vehicles, supporting the transition to cleaner transport and rewarding those making greener choices.
- Residents’ Discount: Changes are being proposed for new applicants to the Residents’ Discount scheme. Details of how this will be adjusted have yet to be finalised but would affect eligibility moving forward.
The Congestion Charge was first introduced in 2003 as a traffic management tool for central London, aiming to reduce congestion and vehicle emissions during peak hours. According to TfL, these new measures are part of an effort to modernise the scheme in line with changing transport trends and environmental targets.
TfL is now encouraging Londoners and stakeholders to provide feedback on the proposals through its Have Your Say platform. The consultation will remain open until Monday 4 August 2025.
What’s next?
Public feedback will be reviewed after the consultation closes, with final decisions expected later in the year. If implemented, these changes will be some of the most significant updates to the Congestion Charge in over a decade.
