A major joint enforcement operation this evening between Merseyside Police and licensing teams from Liverpool and Wolverhampton resulted in nearly 100 defect or suspension notices being handed out to private hire and taxi drivers. The crackdown, aimed at improving public safety and vehicle compliance, also led to two arrests for drug offences and the removal of a disqualified driver from the road.
The operation involved roadside checks of licensed vehicles operating in Liverpool, with officers examining vehicle standards, insurance status, driver documentation, and other licensing conditions. Officers were seen pulling over vehicles for spot inspections at key locations throughout the evening.
In total, close to 100 drivers were issued defect or suspension notices due to issues ranging from unsafe tyres and faulty lights to more serious breaches of licensing regulations. One disqualified driver was found operating a licensed vehicle and was immediately prohibited from continuing. Police confirmed the individual is now facing further investigation.
In addition to vehicle-related offences, two people were arrested on suspicion of drug offences following separate stops. Officers recovered a quantity of suspected illegal substances during searches conducted as part of the operation.
A spokesperson for the task force said:
“The safety of the public is paramount. Tonight’s joint operation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to ensuring that only safe, legal and properly licensed vehicles are on the roads. Passengers should always feel confident that the vehicle they’re in meets the required standards.”
Both Liverpool and Wolverhampton licensing authorities confirmed that further collaborative enforcement operations are being planned, with an emphasis on unlicensed activity, vehicle roadworthiness, and safeguarding concerns.
