Fifty Black Cabs Take War Veterans on Traditional Seaside Trip to Worthing

More than 50 London black cabs carrying veterans from the Second World War through to more recent conflicts descended on Worthing on Tuesday 14 July, for the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans’ much-loved annual summer outing.

The convoy began the day in the Surrey village of South Holmwood, where volunteer drivers, veterans and supporters gathered for refreshments before setting off together for the Sussex coast. Along the route, the procession of black cabs was met with warm waves from members of the public.

This year’s trip, supported by a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, welcomed 13 Second World War veterans alongside others who served in the Falklands, Northern Ireland, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.

London cab driver and veteran Ben Ellis said the Worthing trip was one of those days that reminded him why being part of the Taxi Charity meant so much, describing the chance to spend time with veterans, hear their stories, and catch up with fellow drivers as a real privilege.

The event was attended by Paul Brewer, Chief Executive of Adur & Worthing Councils, and Worthing’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Henna Chowdhury. Taxi Charity Chairman Colin Mills thanked the volunteer drivers directly, telling them that the care, commitment and friendship they show the charity’s veterans, not just on the day itself but throughout the year, is truly remarkable.

Since 1948, the Taxi Charity has relied entirely on volunteer London cab drivers giving up their time and vehicles free of charge to keep traditions like this one running. It’s a brilliant example of the trade at its best, and a day that clearly means as much to the drivers as it does to the veterans themselves.
