North Wales Police have issued a public warning to residents in Wrexham following reports of an “unauthorised taxi” operating in the area, urging passengers to use only licensed and reputable services.

The alert, released by North Wales Police Wrexham Town, emphasised the potential dangers posed by unlicensed drivers who may not have passed essential background checks, putting public safety at risk.

District Inspector Rhodri Ifans spoke out strongly on the issue, advising:
“When getting a taxi, we would advise always booking through a licensed reputable company or arranging a lift with a friend or family member – never accept a lift from a stranger in any circumstances.”

He added: “If you get into a car with a stranger, you could be putting your safety at risk as you may not know who is driving or if the vehicle is even safe.”

Inspector Ifans also offered guidance on how to identify a legitimate taxi:
“Licensed taxis must display taxi plates both inside and outside of the vehicle, and it’s always worthwhile taking note, where possible, of the taxi licence number or the driver’s details.”

The warning comes as part of a broader effort by police to protect vulnerable passengers and crack down on illegal taxi activity across the region. Authorities are encouraging anyone who suspects an unlicensed vehicle is operating as a taxi to report it immediately.
