Virgin Atlantic Engineer, 23, Dies After Being Crushed Inside Heathrow Hangar

Virgin Atlantic has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old aircraft engineer who was seriously injured while carrying out maintenance work on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Heathrow.

Georgie Buxton, who had worked as an aircraft technician for Virgin Atlantic for two years after previously working at Ryanair, was performing maintenance checks on the jet inside a Heathrow hangar when heavy machinery is understood to have collapsed on him. He was placed in intensive care and remained there for four weeks before his family made the decision to switch off life support earlier this month.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said the airline was “heartbroken” to confirm the loss of a much-loved member of its engineering team, and that the company’s thoughts were with Mr Buxton’s family, friends and colleagues. The airline said it is working closely with relevant authorities and with Boeing to establish what happened, and the aircraft involved has been withdrawn from service while the investigation continues. An inquest into his death is expected to open shortly at West London Coroner’s Court, where the precise cause will be formally established.

Virgin Atlantic operates 17 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and while they were once among the youngest aircraft in the fleet, a wave of renewals elsewhere means they now average around ten years old. It’s a sobering reminder that behind every departure board at Heathrow sits a huge, largely unseen workforce of engineers and ground staff, whose safety rarely makes headlines until something goes tragically wrong.
