Three Taken to Hospital After Targeted Firearms Incident in Braintree Town Centre

Three people have been taken to hospital following a targeted firearms incident in Braintree town centre, with one person arrested as police continue searching for others believed to have been involved.

Essex Police said officers were called to Market Place at around 10.10pm on Monday, 31 August.

Three people were injured during the incident and taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said none of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

One person has been arrested in connection with the investigation and remains in police custody.

Detectives currently believe the incident involved people who knew each other rather than a random attack on members of the public.

Essex Police said one specific group is believed to have targeted another group.

Officers have also said they do not currently believe there is an ongoing threat to the wider public.

Four males described as being aged from their mid-teens to their mid-20s were seen leaving the area following the incident.

Police are continuing work to identify and locate those individuals.

A substantial police presence remained in Braintree town centre on Tuesday morning while detectives and specialist officers carried out enquiries.

Part of Rayne Road was also reported closed while the investigation continued, with motorists facing disruption around the town centre.

Detective Inspector Richard Trower said police believed all those directly involved in the incident knew each other.

The force is now appealing for witnesses and anyone who may have captured what happened on CCTV, dashcam or other video footage.

Investigators are particularly interested in information that could help identify the four males seen leaving the area.

Members of the public with information have been asked to contact Essex Police and quote incident 1345 of 31 August.

Information can also be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers.

The investigation remains at an early stage and police have not publicly announced any charges in connection with the incident.

The arrest does not establish criminal responsibility and the circumstances surrounding the firearms incident remain under investigation.
