Passengers travelling to and from London Stansted Airport are facing rail disruption today after a trackside fire damaged signalling equipment on one of the main routes into London.
Stansted Express confirmed on Monday, August 24 that the fire, which happened on Sunday between Cambridge Heath and London Fields, damaged signalling cables used by trains approaching London Liverpool Street.
As a result, trains are currently unable to operate normally between London Liverpool Street and Hackney Downs.
Services are instead being diverted, with Stansted Express warning that the alternative route is causing congestion and delays. Some trains are also being cancelled in an attempt to reduce pressure on the diverted route.
Network Rail engineers are working to replace the damaged signalling cables and restore the normal service.
The disruption could be particularly important for passengers travelling to Stansted Airport for flights today, with the Stansted Express normally providing one of the main direct public transport links between central London and the airport.
Passengers are being advised to check their individual train before travelling. Stansted Express says passengers holding Advance tickets can use an earlier or later train where their booked service has been cancelled.
Travellers delayed by 15 minutes or more may also be eligible to claim compensation through the operator’s Delay Repay scheme.
Passengers with time-sensitive airport journeys may want to allow additional time and check alternative transport options before setting off, particularly while cancellations and diversions remain in place. Travellers looking for an alternative can also pre-book an airport transfer with DM Airport Transfers, which provides journeys to and from airports across the UK.
