London City Airport Joins CAA Hydrogen Challenge to Test Zero-Emission Aircraft Turnarounds

London City Airport has been selected for the third round of the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s Hydrogen Challenge, where it will help examine how hydrogen-electric aircraft could be handled at a busy live airport.

The project is a partnership between London City Airport, aircraft developer Beyond Aero and the University of East London. It will focus on aircraft turnaround operations and the skills that may be required by the next generation of aviation workers.

The CAA announced the selection on 3 September 2026 as part of the latest round of its Hydrogen Sandbox. Three bidders were chosen for the round, which is intended to support the safe introduction of hydrogen as an aviation fuel.
