Construction is continuing on Lincolnshire County Council’s £1.8 million active-travel scheme linking Spalding and Pinchbeck. The project is intended to improve walking, wheeling and cycling connections between the two communities through upgraded shared and segregated routes, crossing improvements and associated highway changes.
The scheme is funded through Active Travel England’s Tranche 3 Active Travel Fund, which was awarded to the council in May 2022. Construction began in June 2026. The council has projected completion during winter 2026, although it has warned that the timetable remains subject to external factors and may change.
According to the council’s September update, Phase 3 works between Park Road and Woolram Wygate were scheduled to run from early September until late October 2026. This phase includes a northbound one-way system on Pinchbeck Road and the continuous closure of Woolram Wygate because of the road’s proximity to the level crossing.
Phase 4, covering the section between Hospital Road and Woolram Wygate, was scheduled from early September to mid-December. It includes northbound-only working on Pinchbeck Road. The published diversion route runs via Pinchbeck Road, Spalding Road, Wardentree Lane, the A16, Holbeach Road and West Elloe Avenue. Access to the hospital from the north is being retained.

The active-travel works are taking place alongside separate repairs on Enterprise Way in Pinchbeck. The road was closed after a major depression appeared in the carriageway and made the adjacent footway unusable.
Investigations found damage to drainage and sewer assets at the site. Anglian Water carried out sewer repair work before the council’s final reinstatement activity. The council said Enterprise Way has experienced recurring road problems over several years and that the latest investigation covered a wider area than the immediate defect.
That broader investigation was intended to identify possible contributing issues involving drainage, utility assets and ground settlement. The overlap between the cycle-route construction, utility work and Enterprise Way repairs provides the operational context for longer and less predictable journeys reported by local transport workers.
The council says the active-travel project is designed to provide safer routes, offer more travel choices and reduce car dependency for local journeys between Spalding and Pinchbeck. Its completion projection remains provisional while the works and related highway activity continue.
