A taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly crashing into a “Welcome to Bolton” road sign while more than twice over the legal drink-driving limit, police have said.

The incident is believed to have occurred on Friday night after darkness fell when a silver-coloured car, reportedly being used as a taxi, collided with the roadside sign on the motorway leading into Bolton, Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the arrest, sharing a statement that read: “You’ve had a great night out, booked a taxi, and expected a safe ride home—when a pesky fixed road sign jumps out on the taxi causing a crash!”
Officers from GMP’s traffic unit responded to the scene and arrested the driver, who, according to police, blew more than twice the legal alcohol limit in a roadside breath test.
An image released by police from the crash site shows a damaged vehicle at the side of the motorway beneath the “Welcome to Bolton” sign.
No serious injuries have been reported, though further details about the collision have yet to be released.
Authorities are urging anyone with concerns about crime or anti-social behaviour on the roads to report it by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, anonymous reports can be made via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
