Holidaymakers expecting to touch down in Bristol found themselves several hundred miles off course after a runway fault forced Bristol Airport to suspend all flights, sending arrivals scrambling to alternative airports including Manchester.
Bristol Airport suspended operations on Friday evening (7 August) after what the airport described as a “defect” affecting its single runway. The closure triggered a wave of delays, cancellations and diversions across multiple airlines throughout the evening.
Among those affected was a Jet2 flight returning from Turkey, which was rerouted to Manchester Airport in the early hours of Saturday morning rather than landing at its intended destination. One passenger, TikToker Luke Arnel-Cameron, documented the ordeal to his 1.2 million followers, describing the moment fellow passengers were told of the diversion and later praising Jet2’s cabin crew for their support throughout what he called a “flight from hell.” Jet2 provided affected passengers with Uber vouchers to help them complete their journeys home — in Arnel-Cameron’s case, a lengthy trip south to Gloucester in the early hours of the morning.
He wasn’t alone in facing disruption. Passenger Gabrielle Butler was aboard a TUI flight bound for Morocco when it was held on the tarmac at Bristol from around 5.15pm until 7pm before her flight was ultimately cancelled and rebooked for 8pm the following day. Footage from the airport showed ground crews working on the runway with equipment during the closure.
Bristol Airport said the fault was repaired and cured overnight, with a spokesperson apologising for the disruption: “We’re very sorry to customers affected and any impact this has had to their summer holiday… The safety of passengers and staff is of paramount importance, which is why we made the decision to temporarily suspend flights as a precaution and to allow for the runway repair to be carried out.”
