300 Miles Of EV Range Is Becoming The New Normal — Is 400 Next?

Three hundred miles of range is quickly becoming the baseline expectation across the EV market, according to analysis from InsideEVs, as input costs fall and manufacturers compete harder on range as a selling point.

There were 43 EVs on sale in the US in the 2025 model year meeting or exceeding that 300-mile benchmark, up from just four back in 2020 — and InsideEVs projects that figure could reach around 60 by the end of this year. That’s a genuinely fast shift. Back in 2020, the Tesla Model S became the first EV to earn a 400-plus-mile EPA rating, and the Lucid Air pushed the bar past 500 miles the following year. Both were — and largely still are — expensive, aerodynamically optimised outliers. What’s changed is that the technology behind those headline figures is now filtering down into cars ordinary buyers can actually afford.

New entrants like the BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60, both expected in UK showrooms, are pushing the next threshold of 400 miles into more mainstream, less exclusively luxury territory than it has traditionally occupied. Whether 400 miles becomes as ubiquitous as 300 has is less certain. Achieving it in smaller, more affordable cars requires genuine advances in battery chemistry and packaging, not just bigger batteries — and UK buyers already have a wide spread of options in the 300-400 mile bracket, as DM News covered in detail back in May with a round-up of 30 of the longest-range EVs currently sold here.

There’s also a fair argument that the industry’s race towards ever-bigger numbers is chasing a problem that barely exists day to day. Separate research from EV data specialist Recurrent, based on tens of thousands of real-world vehicles, found that even owners of 350-plus-mile EVs use only around 11-12% of their available range on an average day — meaning the vast majority of that expensive extra battery capacity sits unused most of the time. The appeal seems to be less about daily driving and more about peace of mind for the occasional long trip, plus the psychological comfort of not having to think about charging.

For drivers doing high daily mileage — including taxi, private hire and airport transfer work — the more relevant question is often less about outright range and more about how fast a car recovers charge during a break. A 300-mile car that can go from 10-80% in under 20 minutes will often serve a working day better than a 500-mile car that charges slowly, since the real constraint for professional drivers tends to be minutes off the road between jobs rather than headline range on a spec sheet. It’s worth weighing that against your own charging access and shift pattern before assuming more range automatically means a better choice for the job.
