If you’re chasing a cheap, half-decent-range EV to get started on the taxis or private hire, Matty’s latest video runs through his pick of the five best-value options currently on the used market — with the caveat that high-mileage EVs can come with little or no battery warranty left, so it’s worth doing your own homework before buying.
First up is the MG5. It’s not Matty’s favourite to sit in — at 6’5″, he found the driving position awkward and the seat low — but he’s quick to point out that for most Uber drivers doing low-mileage town work, it’s a genuinely solid choice. The example he features is £7,895, with a 52kWh battery, automatic gearbox, a 214-mile range and some driveaway warranty from the dealer. Buying secondhand from a dealer rather than privately, he notes, gives extra reassurance if the battery or motor ever needs attention.
Next is one Matty says is criminally underrated: the Jaguar I-Pace. The 2018-plate example he shows is priced under £10,000 with 77,000 miles on the clock and a 287-mile range. Despite looking compact, he describes it as more like a small SUV inside — upright, roomier than expected, with a decent boot.
Third is a car close to home — Matty’s own daily driver is a 2019-plate first edition Kia e-Niro, bought for £4,000 with 328,000 miles on the original battery and motor. The example featured in the video is a cleaner one: a 2019-plate, 64kWh e-Niro with around 280 miles of range, 81,000 miles on the clock, priced at £9,500.
Fourth is the Tesla Model 3, which Matty rates highly for longer-distance airport work thanks to access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. The featured example is £12,200, with a 348-mile range and just over 100,000 miles covered. Tesla’s Long Range models carry an 8-year/120,000-mile warranty on the battery and motor, meaning this one still has roughly 19,000 miles of cover left.
The most expensive of the five is the Tesla Model Y, at £16,870. Matty’s take: if you don’t need a big boot, go for the Model 3; if you do — especially for airport runs — the Model Y is hard to beat, combining a genuinely huge boot, a 280-mile range, Supercharger access, and around 30,000 miles of warranty remaining.
Matty says this list is deliberately focused on the cheapest options rather than the “best” EVs outright — newer models like the MG IM6, Kia EV5 and EV6, and the Jaguar I-Pace’s pricier siblings all offer more space or range, just at a higher cost. He’s planning follow-up videos covering pricier but more practical EVs, and possibly one on electric minibuses.
