A 14-year-old boy is assisting police with their enquiries after a hoax threat was made against an aircraft approaching Manchester Airport on Friday evening, prompting the Ministry of Defence to scramble RAF Typhoon jets.
Nats, formerly National Air Traffic Services, received the threat at around 6pm on Friday, triggering a response from police, the RAF and airport authorities. The Typhoons launched from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to intercept the Qatar Airways flight, which was travelling from Doha. The aircraft landed safely, and Greater Manchester Police confirmed there was no threat to passengers or crew.
The boy, from Bolton, was not on the flight himself. Greater Manchester Police’s Chief Inspector Gary Homa said this kind of behaviour was completely unacceptable, given the resources it diverts and the alarm it causes.
