Virgin Atlantic is celebrating 30 years of operations at Manchester Airport — and they’re marking the milestone with a brand-new Airbus A330neo named after one of the city’s most famous musical exports.
The airline launched its first flight from Manchester on 17 May 1996, when Sir Richard Branson personally kicked off operations with a route to Orlando, Florida. Three decades on, Manchester has become a key hub in Virgin Atlantic’s UK network, providing direct long-haul links across the North of England without passengers having to schlep south to Heathrow or Gatwick.

To celebrate, Virgin Atlantic has introduced a new A330neo to the fleet, dubbed “Champagne Supernova” after the iconic Oasis track — a nod to the city’s musical heritage. The aircraft carries the registration G-VMAN, a clear tip of the cap to Manchester itself. A customer event was held at Manchester Airport on Monday 18 May, featuring a photo opportunity, signature treats and themed gift giveaways for travellers.

But this isn’t just a ceremonial moment. Virgin Atlantic is putting some serious investment behind the anniversary. The airline is adding extra flights on its Manchester–Orlando route this summer, and plans to upgauge those services to the larger Airbus A350-1000 for Winter 2026, with further capacity increases pencilled in for Summer 2027.
Dave Geer, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic, said: “For three decades, Manchester has been our home in the North, connecting customers throughout the North of England to destinations across the US and beyond. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re building for the future — continuing to grow our presence, giving customers more choice and strengthening the connections that matter most.”
Virgin Atlantic’s current Manchester network includes flights to Orlando, Atlanta, New York, Las Vegas and a seasonal winter service to Barbados — including the only direct route to the US West Coast from the North of England.

There’s also a new lounge deal. Virgin has confirmed a partnership with The Executive, a premium lounge opening in Manchester Terminal 2 in July 2026. Access will be reserved for Upper Class customers and Flying Club Gold members.
Stephen Turner, Chief Commercial Officer at Manchester Airport, said the airport is proud to connect the North to the world with “a route network unrivalled in the UK outside London,” pointing to its near-complete £1.3bn, decade-long Terminal 2 transformation.
For taxi and PHV drivers working the airport runs, growing long-haul traffic from MAN means one thing: more demand for airport transfers. With Virgin clearly doubling down on the North, that demand looks set to climb further over the next few years.
