As of 1 April 2026, the UK government has officially increased the financial support available for electric vehicle (EV) charging. The standard grant for home and workplace installations has risen from £350 to £500 per socket, marking a 40% uplift designed to make the switch to electric more affordable.
The Department for Transport confirmed that this enhanced funding will be available for a final year, set to expire on 31 March 2027. The move aims to lower the “upfront cost” barrier, with the £500 grant now typically covering nearly half the cost of a standard home installation.

Who is eligible?
While the amount has increased, the eligibility criteria remain focused on those who face the most challenges with charging infrastructure:
- Renters and Flat Owners: Residents in rented accommodation or flats with dedicated off-street parking.
- Homeowners without Driveways: Those with on-street parking who install approved “cross-pavement” solutions, such as charging gullies.
- Landlords: Residential landlords can claim up to 200 grants per year, while the commercial landlord scheme has now been phased out.
- Workplaces and Schools: Small businesses and state-funded schools can also access the increased rates, with schools eligible for up to £2,000 per socket.
Why the Change?
The uplift comes as the government reports that EV drivers can save up to £1,400 per year in running costs compared to petrol or diesel cars when using domestic electricity rates. By increasing the grant, the government hopes to unlock “home charging” prices—which can be as low as 2p per mile—for millions of people who don’t have traditional driveways.
For those who applied before 1 April but haven’t had their charger installed yet, the government is allowing users to re-apply to secure the higher £500 rate.
