A Cornwall taxi driver has been jailed after sexually abusing a child passenger, following a case heard at Truro Crown Court.
According to a report by CornwallLive, the 79-year-old driver was convicted after the court heard how the offence took place while the victim was in his taxi. The incident involved a child under the age of 16 and was described in court as a serious abuse of trust by someone working in a licensed role.
The court heard that the offence occurred during a taxi journey, with the driver later being arrested and charged following a police investigation. After pleading guilty, the driver was sentenced to four years in prison and was also made subject to lifelong sex offender registration.
During sentencing, the judge highlighted the severity of the offence and the impact on the victim, stating that the driver had used his position to exploit a vulnerable passenger. The court also heard mitigation on behalf of the defendant, but this did not outweigh the seriousness of the crime.
The case reinforces the importance of safeguarding responsibilities placed on licensed taxi and private hire drivers, particularly when carrying children and vulnerable passengers.

DM Commentary
Cases like this are deeply disturbing and damaging — not only to victims and their families, but to the wider taxi and private hire industry as a whole.
The overwhelming majority of drivers work professionally and responsibly, but incidents like this underline why strict safeguarding checks, DBS monitoring, and ongoing licensing oversight are essential. Trust is fundamental in this trade, and when that trust is broken, the consequences are rightly severe.
For drivers, this also serves as a reminder that licensing is not a right — it is a responsibility. Any abuse of position, especially involving vulnerable passengers, will be met with the strongest possible response from courts and licensing authorities.
