National Standards Not Enough, Says MP in Taxi Licensing Debate

An MP has today used Parliament to call on the Government to legislate on cross-border hiring within the taxi and private hire sector, warning that the current system weakens safeguarding protections and service standards.

In a video shared on Facebook, Louise Haigh said she raised the issue after hearing repeated concerns from both constituents and taxi drivers. She argued that the law as it stands allows drivers licensed in one area to work extensively in another, making it harder for local authorities to enforce standards and ensure passenger safety.

The MP welcomed the Government’s plans to introduce national minimum standards for taxi and private hire drivers, but stressed that this does not go far enough. She said further legislation is needed to properly address cross-border hiring and described it as “brilliant” that the Leader of the House agreed the issue requires more attention.

During the parliamentary exchange, it was also confirmed that the Government is still looking into the issue further, rather than committing to immediate legislative changes. Louise Haigh said she would continue campaigning until stronger laws are put in place.

DM Commentary

Cross-border hiring has been one of the most controversial issues in the UK taxi and private hire trade for years. While national minimum standards may improve consistency, many drivers and operators feel that enforcement gaps will remain unless licensing rules themselves are tightened.

From an industry point of view, this is about fairness as much as safety. Local drivers play by local rules, yet can find themselves competing with vehicles licensed hundreds of miles away, often with little practical oversight. If the Government is serious about safeguarding and service standards, this is one area where many in the trade believe decisive action is long overdue.
