Amsterdam Airport Cancels At Least 800 Flights as Snow and Wind Cause UK Knock-On Disruption

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has cancelled at least 800 flights after heavy snow, icy conditions and strong winds swept across the Netherlands, triggering widespread disruption across Europe.

According to The Guardian, the extreme winter weather made it unsafe to operate normally, forcing airlines to ground hundreds of flights and leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The airport confirmed that runways required constant clearing, while aircraft needed additional de-icing before departure, significantly reducing capacity.

Schiphol is one of Europe’s busiest hubs and a key connection point for UK travellers. As a result, the cancellations have caused significant knock-on effects for UK airports, with flights to and from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and other major UK cities affected.

Passengers travelling between the UK and the Netherlands have faced:

  • Last-minute flight cancellations
  • Delays caused by aircraft being out of position
  • Missed onward connections via Amsterdam

Airlines warned that disruption could continue even after conditions improve, as aircraft and crews are not where they should be following the mass cancellations.

UK Airports Feel the Impact

While the worst of the weather has been centred on mainland Europe, UK airports are feeling the consequences due to Schiphol’s role as a major transit hub. Flights scheduled to operate normally from UK airports have been cancelled simply because the incoming aircraft never arrived from Amsterdam.

This has led to crowded terminals, confused passengers, and growing pressure on airlines to rebook travellers during an already challenging winter period.

This is a reminder of how fragile the air travel network can be during severe winter weather. Even when UK conditions are manageable, disruption at a major European hub like Amsterdam can quickly ripple across the UK.

For taxi and private hire drivers, situations like this often mean:

  • Passengers arriving hours late and needing emergency transfers
  • Last-minute bookings as travellers abandon rail or coach options
  • Increased demand for airport pickups following re-routed or delayed flights

It’s also another example of why passengers are increasingly turning to pre-booked airport transfers rather than relying on last-minute options when disruption hits.
