According to a report by Engadget, Uber has unveiled the design of its upcoming robotaxi at CES 2026, offering the clearest look yet at what riders could see on the road later this year. The vehicle is built on a Lucid Gravity electric SUV platform from Lucid Motors and uses autonomous driving technology developed by Nuro.
The robotaxi features a distinctive exterior with a large roof-mounted sensor system, combining cameras, radar and lidar. Engadget reports that this sensor “halo” is designed not only for autonomous navigation but also to visually communicate the vehicle’s status to pedestrians and other road users.

Inside, Uber has taken control of the cabin design. The robotaxi is laid out to prioritise passenger comfort, with seating for multiple riders and screens that allow passengers to see route progress and interact with the vehicle during the journey. There is no driver area, reinforcing that the vehicle is designed for fully autonomous operation.
Uber confirmed that this is a production-intent design rather than a concept, signalling that the company is moving closer to real-world deployment following earlier autonomous testing.

DM News Commentary
For taxi and private hire drivers, this reveal is another reminder that autonomous vehicles are no longer just a future concept — they’re being actively prepared for commercial rollout.
While robotaxis like this are still limited in where and how they can operate, the long-term direction is clear. Uber investing heavily in autonomous partnerships raises serious questions about the future role of human drivers, particularly in dense urban areas where robotaxis are most likely to be deployed first.
That said, real-world driving — especially in the UK — comes with challenges that tech demos don’t show. Complex road layouts, unpredictable passengers, licensing rules and safeguarding responsibilities remain areas where professional drivers still have the edge. For now, drivers are watching closely, but the pressure is definitely building.
