A Mercedes Vito once used as a black cab in Edinburgh is setting off for Ukraine tomorrow, filled with Christmas gifts for children and vital medical supplies.
According to Linda, a member of the Association of Hackney Carriage Drivers of the City of Edinburgh, the vehicle will first stop in Newcastle to collect additional donated medical items before making the long journey to Ukraine.
The gifts—donated by The Children’s Outing (a long-running black-cab charity that takes sick children out for special day trips), The Taxi Academy, and cab drivers from across Edinburgh—will be delivered to hospitals and orphanages in Ukraine.
Once emptied, the Vito will be repurposed for frontline use, much like a previous taxi donated earlier this year. Linda noted that the last vehicle went on to serve as a transport unit for humanitarian supplies and later as an ambulance. (Picture below from last years taxi)

This latest effort highlights the strong charitable tradition within Scotland’s taxi trade, with Edinburgh cabbies once again rallying together to support families and medics living through the conflict.
DM News Commentary
Edinburgh’s taxi community has a long history of charitable work, but this latest mission stands out for its scale and impact. Converting a former taxi into a frontline support vehicle is a reminder of how the UK taxi trade often steps up far beyond its day-to-day role.
From fundraising to logistics, cabbies continue to show their reach and generosity — especially during a time when many drivers are also facing their own financial pressures. It’s another example of how the taxi profession supports not only passengers, but entire communities both at home and abroad.
