Uber driver stunned after passenger leaves taser-style device behind in car

An Uber driver has contacted Driver Matty at DM News after discovering what appears to be a taser-style stun device left behind by a passenger following a recent trip.

The driver, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he was “stunned” to find the black device on the back seat shortly after dropping off a customer. The item was inside a nylon holster and looked like an electronic self-defence tool.

He told DM News:

“I noticed something black on the seat when I was cleaning up after my last job. When I picked it up and realised what it was, I couldn’t believe it. You never know what people are carrying around.”

It’s currently unclear whether the device is genuine or a replica. However, possession of a taser or stun gun is illegal in the UK without special authorisation, as such devices are classified as firearms under the Firearms Act 1968.

The driver confirmed he contacted local police for advice and how is the best way to proceed with the situation.

While Uber has not issued a statement regarding this specific incident, the company’s published safety guidance advises drivers to report any suspicious or dangerous items found in their vehicles directly to the police and to also log the event through the in-app help section. This unusual discovery serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of private hire and taxi work. Drivers regularly find forgotten items like phones, wallets and luggage — but potentially dangerous devices raise serious safety concerns. It also highlights the importance of post-trip vehicle checks and prompt reporting to the authorities when something seems out of place.
