Former Birmingham taxi driver convicted of historic rape and child abuse

A former Birmingham taxi driver has been convicted of raping and sexually abusing three young girls in the 1990s and early 2000s.

According to West Midlands Police, Peter King, now aged 72, used his position as a black cab driver to groom and exploit the victims, who were aged between six and fifteen at the time.

King lured the children in by offering them gifts, clothing, and food, and taking them on swimming trips and holidays. He then took them back to his flat in Highgate, Birmingham, where the abuse took place.

One of the victims, aged 15 at the time, became pregnant by King and later had a termination. She courageously came forward years later, helping detectives from the Public Protection Unit (PPU) bring King to justice.

Following a lengthy investigation and trial at Birmingham Crown Court, King, of Malin Close, Southampton, was found guilty of 15 sex offences, including multiple counts of rape and indecent assault. The trial concluded on 31 October, and he has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on 12 January.

Detective Investigating Officer Liz Weston, from the PPU, said:

“This has been a long and complex investigation into the abuse of young girls who were groomed by King.
He preyed upon them when they were at their most vulnerable.
He tried to portray that he was a good man who cared for them, but the jury saw through those lies.
I’m pleased that the women he abused as children all those years ago have finally received the justice they so deserve.”

Det Insp Weston also urged anyone who has experienced similar abuse, whether historic or recent, to come forward and speak to police:

“We are here to create a safe space for you and we will listen.”
