Huddersfield taxi driver suffers “significant facial injuries” in 4am robbery — six arrested

A taxi driver in Huddersfield was left with what police described as “significant facial injuries” following a violent early-morning robbery in Milnsbridge.
According to YorkshireLive, police were called to Market Street at around 4:10am on Saturday 18 October, after the victim — a licensed cabbie — was assaulted and robbed while working.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that six people were arrested on suspicion of robbery: five women aged 20, 21, 25, 27 and 30, and one male aged 17. All have since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries. Officers also cordoned off an area on Greenway, Milnsbridge, as part of their investigation.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact the Kirklees District Crime Team, quoting crime reference 13250598805, or to pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers.

Industry and driver safety implications

Incidents like this underline the risks taxi and private hire drivers face — particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when they’re working alone. The Huddersfield assault serves as a stark reminder of why driver safety measures must remain a priority across the UK trade.

Operators and drivers are being encouraged to:

  • Equip vehicles with CCTV or body-worn cameras.
  • Use panic buttons or GPS-tracking safety features in dispatch apps.
  • Avoid unlit or isolated pickup points when possible.
  • Maintain real-time check-ins with bases or family during overnight shifts.

DM News Commentary

The Huddersfield attack is a troubling reminder that cabbies remain vulnerable even while performing essential public services. The swift response from West Yorkshire Police — resulting in six arrests within hours — shows the effectiveness of rapid community reporting and in-car evidence systems.

For local licensing authorities and operator networks, this case raises important questions about late-shift driver protection, the availability of CCTV grants, and the need for better-lit taxi ranks or pickup zones in suburban areas like Milnsbridge.
