Wolverhampton compliance officers carry out spot checks in Warwickshire

Wolverhampton’s Public Protection team has confirmed that its compliance officers conducted spot checks on Wolverhampton-licensed private hire vehicles operating in Warwickshire last weekend.

The checks were part of ongoing efforts to ensure that standards and licensing conditions are being met by vehicles and drivers working outside of the city.

Cross-border checks on Wolverhampton-licensed taxis

The operation, carried out by WV Public Protection, targeted Wolverhampton-licensed cars working in the Warwickshire area. Officers inspected vehicles to confirm that they were properly licensed, roadworthy, and compliant with the city’s private hire regulations.

While the council did not release figures for suspensions or warnings issued, previous spot checks have led to immediate suspensions for vehicles found with defects or missing documents.

Wolverhampton expands national enforcement powers

These checks form part of Wolverhampton City Council’s wider Taxi Compliance Strategy 2025–2027, which includes conducting enforcement activity beyond the city boundary.

The council has become known for its national licensing model, with thousands of drivers operating across England under Wolverhampton-issued licences. To improve safety oversight, the authority has recently extended cross-border enforcement powers to 11 additional local authorities, allowing their compliance officers to inspect Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles in their own areas.

A spokesperson for WV Public Protection said the aim is to ensure “consistent safety and compliance standards wherever Wolverhampton vehicles are operating.”

What this means for drivers and passengers

For drivers, the message is clear — compliance officers could be checking vehicles anywhere in the country. Ensuring that documentation, vehicle condition, and safety standards meet Wolverhampton’s requirements is essential to avoid penalties or suspension.

For passengers, it’s a reassurance that steps are being taken to protect their safety, even when booking cars licensed outside their local area.
